The Solar City Smart Lifestyle Centre will help to promote sustainable living to the local community during Sustainable House Day 2009.

The open day at the centre on Sunday, September 13 provides an opportunity for residents of Townsville and Magnetic Island to see how they can apply sustainable principles to their own homes.

Anyone thinking about improving their home to be more comfortable in the region’s tropical climate or to improve the energy efficiency can learn from the experiences of others, including the Solar City project team.

The Smart Lifestyle Centre was created from a refurbishment of the former Magnetic Island Sport and Recreation Club at Horseshoe Bay.

With concrete block walls, a thick concrete slab on the ground, a pitched metal roof and limited internal airflow, the building required significant retrofitting to improve its ability to provide a comfortable work environment.

The building, located at 64-88 Horseshoe Bay Road on Magnetic Island, is now the Solar City project office as well as an energy efficiency information and interpretive centre for the project.

In addition to being an energy efficient building, it also features solar panels on the roof to generate electricity and a range of innovative technologies currently being trialled at the site.

The Smart Lifestyle Centre, and the other buildings participating in the Sustainable House Day, will be open from 10am until 4pm.
