The Solar City Smart Lifestyle Centre on Magnetic Island continues to take shape in preparation for its official unveiling to the community on Saturday, September 13.
A Community Day celebration will be held on the Island to mark the opening of the Centre, which will be attended by Peter Garrett, Federal Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts.
The Townsville: Queensland Solar City project is part of the Australian Government’s
$93.8 million Solar Cities Program – a visionary energy initiative bringing together industry, business, governments and communities to re-think the way they produce, consume and conserve energy.
Ergon Energy’s role in the innovative program is the Magnetic Island Solar Suburb project, based on Magnetic Island.
Solar City Community Engagement Manager Julie Heath said the Smart Lifestyle Centre would be created from a refurbishment of the former Magnetic Island Sport and Recreation Club at Horseshoe Bay.
“Once completed, the Centre will become the project office as well as an energy efficiency information and interpretive centre for the project,” she said.
“The Magnetic Island Solar Suburb will save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 50,000 tonnes during the life of the project.
“This is equivalent to taking 1700 cars off the road for the same period.”
Under an agreement with Townsville City Council, the building will be handed back to the council for community use once the Solar City project is finished, providing the island with a fully functioning facility.
Members of the Magnetic Island community are invited to take part in the celebrations for the opening of the Smart Lifestyle Centre on September 13.
Activities will begin at 10am, with the official unveiling taking place at 11am.
